The US dollar just had its worst week in over a month. Hot US inflation data lifted the greenback and Treasury yields on Wednesday, but neither held the gain: the dollar index finished about 0.5 percent lower on the week, while the 10-year yield slipped from about 5.24 percent to near 5.09 percent. The culprit was Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, whose refusal to give any forward guidance at the Bangkok conference on Friday unwound the rate-hike bets that had been supporting the currency, sending the dollar lower against six of the seven major currencies.

Among the majors, the Canadian dollar finished first for the week, just ahead of the Swiss franc, riding the surge in crude oil prices above $100 a barrel. The Australian dollar finished lower against all of the majors after a surprise drop in September jobs data undermined the case for further tightening by the Reserve Bank of Australia. The yen was the one major that held level with the dollar, a notable show of resilience. The euro benefited from the dollar's slide but remains hostage to the same global inflation dynamics, since energy costs drive European price pressures even more directly than American ones.

The mechanics of the dollar's fall are straightforward. On Wednesday, the hotter-than-expected CPI report sent the dollar index to an 18-month peak overnight and crushed gold by $60 in fifteen minutes. But the rally died the moment Warsh declined to endorse the market's hike pricing. Traders pared the odds of an October rate hike to about 15 to 20 percent after his speech, from more than 25 percent on Thursday. Without the prospect of imminent tightening, the dollar's yield advantage narrowed, and positions built up on the hawkish thesis were unwound into the weekend. For currency traders operating in the Gulf, the lesson is that positioning into a blackout is always a crowded trade.

The fundamental backdrop for the dollar remains two-sided. On the bullish side, the US economy keeps outperforming, with September industrial production up 0.7 percent against a 0.4 percent forecast and inflation running hotter than expected, which keeps a December hike firmly on the table at 74.3 percent odds. On the bearish side, a weaker dollar is exactly what the rest of the world wants: it eases financial conditions for emerging markets, lifts commodity prices, and reduces imported inflation abroad. The greenback's year has been defined by this tug-of-war between rate differentials and global risk appetite.

What happens next depends on the data calendar inside the Fed blackout. With no Fed officials permitted to speak from October 17 through October 29, every scheduled release, from retail sales to employment indicators, gets read as a direct clue about the October 27-28 decision. A soft number could extend the dollar's slide as December hike odds fade; another hot print could snap the dollar back toward its 18-month highs. Signal services that cover major currency pairs are recalibrating their models for a regime where the Fed gives no hints and the data does all the talking.

For retail forex traders, the practical implications are about volatility rather than direction. A 0.5 percent weekly move in the dollar index is large enough to shake out leveraged positions but not large enough to define a trend. Pairs like EUR/USD and USD/JPY are likely to chop through the blackout as traders position for the October 28 decision without any official guidance to anchor them. The dollar's worst week in a month may mark the start of a deeper pullback, or it may simply be a pause before December hike pricing reasserts itself. Either way, position sizing matters more than prediction right now.
