Paper trading a bot means running it against live market data without risking real money, and it is the most underrated step in automated trading. Backtests show how a strategy would have performed in the past; paper trading shows how it behaves right now, with real spreads, real timing, and real market surprises. Skipping this step is how traders discover bugs, bad settings, and unrealistic assumptions with their actual capital. A few weeks of paper trading costs nothing and can save everything.

Start by running the bot on the same platform and settings you plan to use live, but connected to a demo or paper account. Use the same capital size, the same pairs, and the same risk settings, because a paper test with different parameters proves nothing about your live setup. Record every trade the bot takes, including fills, fees as they would apply, and any errors or missed signals. If your platform does not offer paper trading, run the bot in a mode that logs intended trades without executing them, and track the results manually.

Watch three things closely. First, execution: does the bot place orders promptly, at expected prices, and without errors or duplicate orders. Second, behaviour: does it respect its stop losses, position limits, and trading hours exactly as configured. Third, performance: how do its live paper results compare with the backtest. Some divergence is normal, but a large gap suggests the backtest was overfitted or the live conditions differ from the tested ones, such as higher fees or thinner liquidity than assumed.

Paper trade for at least two to four weeks, and long enough to cover a reasonable number of trades, ideally fifty or more. A bot that trades once a week needs longer than a bot that trades daily. Include at least one volatile session in the test if possible, because calm markets hide problems that volatility exposes. Do not cut the test short because early results look good; early results are the least reliable part of any test, and patience here is cheaper than regret later.

When the paper period ends, review the results against clear criteria you set in advance, such as maximum drawdown and minimum trade count. If the bot passes, go live with a small fraction of your planned capital, perhaps 10 to 25 percent, and scale up only after another few weeks of clean live behaviour. If it fails, fix the issue and restart the paper test rather than pushing ahead. Paper trading is not a delay; it is the cheapest insurance in automated trading.

Before your paper trading period begins, write down the criteria that will decide whether the bot goes live. These might include a minimum number of trades, a maximum drawdown, and a requirement that live paper results stay within a reasonable range of the backtest. Deciding these criteria in advance prevents the most human of errors: moving the goalposts because you are impatient to go live or because early results flatter you. If the bot fails the criteria, extend the test or fix the problem and restart, rather than lowering the bar. Clear pass criteria turn paper trading from a vague waiting period into a genuine test with a verdict you can trust.

Paper trading has its own traps to watch for. Paper fills are often optimistic, assuming instant execution at the displayed price without slippage or partial fills, which flatters results. Paper trading also removes the emotional pressure of real money, so a trader who paper trades calmly may still panic when real capital is at stake. To counter this, apply conservative assumptions in your paper test, such as adding extra slippage to every trade, and treat paper results as an upper bound rather than a prediction. When you go live, expect somewhat worse execution and somewhat stronger emotions, and size your first live allocation accordingly so that neither surprise causes damage.
