  • Overview: Fees and slippage quietly eat bot profits, and this guide explains how both work, why backtests hide them, and the habits that reduce cost drag....

Many bot strategies look profitable in backtests and disappointing in live trading, and the gap is often explained by two quiet costs: fees and slippage. Fees are the explicit charges your exchange takes on every trade. Slippage is the difference between the price you expected and the price you actually got, caused by market movement between your order and its fill. Together they act as a tax on every trade, and for bots that trade frequently, that tax can consume the entire edge.

Exchanges usually charge a percentage of each trade's value, often with different rates for makers, who add liquidity with limit orders, and takers, who remove it with market orders. A bot that trades with market orders pays the taker rate on every trade, and on dozens of trades a day that adds up fast. Some exchanges offer fee discounts for holding their native token or for higher monthly volume, so check your effective rate rather than the headline rate. Always include fees in your backtest at the rate you will actually pay, not the lowest advertised rate.

Slippage hits hardest in fast markets and thin order books. If your bot sends a market order during a sharp move, the fill price can be noticeably worse than the price it saw a moment earlier. Limit orders avoid slippage but risk not filling at all, which is its own cost when a good setup is missed. Bots trading large sizes relative to the order book suffer more, because their own orders move the price. Test your bot with realistic slippage assumptions, and be suspicious of any backtest that assumes perfect fills on every trade.

Several habits reduce cost drag. Prefer limit orders where the strategy allows, since maker fees are usually lower. Avoid trading during the most volatile minutes unless the strategy specifically needs them, because spreads and slippage are worst then. Reduce trade frequency by filtering out marginal setups; a bot that trades half as often with slightly larger, better setups often keeps more profit after costs. Finally, choose pairs with deep liquidity, because tight spreads and deep books mean smaller slippage on every fill.

Before you judge any bot, calculate its cost per trade and its total monthly cost, then compare that with its gross profit. A useful rule is to re-run your backtest with double the expected fees and slippage; if the strategy still performs acceptably, it has a real margin of safety. Bots are not magic profit machines; they are businesses with running costs, and the traders who account for those costs honestly are the ones whose bots survive contact with real markets.

Once a month, total up everything your bots cost you: exchange fees, spreads, slippage estimates, subscription charges, and VPS costs. Compare that total with the month's gross profit to find your true net result. Many traders are surprised by this exercise, discovering that a bot they thought was profitable was barely covering its costs, or that one bot's costs dwarf another's. Use the report to decide where to cut: a high-frequency bot with thin margins is often the first candidate for a filter or a fee optimisation. Honest cost accounting is unglamorous, but it is the difference between believing a bot works and knowing it does.

Fees are not always fixed, and several legitimate ways exist to reduce them. Many exchanges offer volume-based tiers, so consolidating your trading on one exchange can push you into a lower rate. Some exchanges discount fees for holding their native token or paying fees in it, though you should weigh that against the risk of holding an extra asset. Using limit orders to earn maker rates instead of paying taker rates is often the simplest saving, and reviewing your fee tier quarterly ensures you are not paying a higher rate than your volume justifies. Small percentage savings compound quickly for active bots, and a yearly fee review is one of the easiest profit improvements available to any bot trader.
