  • Overview: A trading bot that stops when your computer sleeps is a liability. Learn why a VPS is the standard home for bots, how to choose and set one up, and how to secure and monitor it....

An AI trading bot is only useful while it is running, and running means twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, especially for crypto markets that never close. A home computer that sleeps, restarts for updates, or loses internet at 3 a.m. is a liability. That is why serious bot traders run their bots on a virtual private server, a VPS: a small, always-on computer in a data centre that keeps the bot trading while you sleep, travel, or turn your own machine off. Setting one up is simpler than it sounds.

A VPS offers three advantages that matter for trading: uptime, stability, and latency. Data centres provide redundant power and internet connections, so a VPS stays online through the power cuts and router restarts that interrupt home setups. A VPS also runs a stable operating system without the automatic updates, sleep modes, and background software that cause home computers to reboot at the worst moments. Finally, choosing a VPS located near your exchange's servers reduces latency, the delay between your bot's decision and its order reaching the exchange. For most strategies, latency differences of milliseconds do not matter, but for high-frequency bots they can be the difference between profit and loss.

A VPS also separates your trading from your daily computer use. Streaming video, gaming, or a heavy download on your home machine cannot slow down a bot running on a separate server. That isolation is valuable even for low-frequency strategies, because it removes an entire category of avoidable failures.

For most traders, a small VPS is enough. A basic plan with one or two processor cores, two gigabytes of memory, and twenty gigabytes of storage handles a typical bot easily, and costs roughly five to fifteen dollars a month from major providers. Choose a location near your exchange's data centre where possible; many providers offer regions in Europe, North America, and Asia. Choose a Linux operating system, usually Ubuntu, since most bot software is built for it and most tutorials assume it.

Setup follows a standard sequence. Create the VPS, connect to it securely using SSH keys rather than passwords, and update the operating system. Install the software your bot needs, such as Python or Node.js, and any dependencies listed in the bot's documentation. Install the bot itself, configure it with your API keys, and test it in paper mode first. Use a process manager, such as PM2 for Node.js bots or systemd for others, to ensure the bot restarts automatically if it crashes or if the server reboots. This auto-restart step is frequently skipped and frequently regretted.

A VPS holding live trading credentials deserves proper security. Disable password login and use SSH keys only. Configure a firewall that allows only the ports you need, typically SSH and whatever your bot requires. Keep the operating system and bot software updated, and set up automatic security updates where possible. Never store API keys in plain text files that could be exposed; use environment variables or a secrets file with restricted permissions.

Also consider who can access the VPS. If a bot platform offers to host the bot for you, that is a different model from running your own VPS, and the security trade-offs differ. On your own VPS, you control access completely, but you are also responsible for all security. On a hosted platform, security is the provider's job, but you trust them with your API keys. Neither is wrong, but the choice should be deliberate.

A VPS is not set-and-forget. Check that the bot is running at least once a day, and set up alerts for crashes, disconnections, or unusual behaviour. Most process managers can send notifications, and many bots have built-in alerting through email or messaging apps. Monitor disk space too: logs grow over time, and a full disk can crash a bot silently. Set up log rotation so old logs are compressed or deleted automatically.

Schedule a weekly maintenance check: confirm the bot's version is current, review its recent trades against expectations, check server resources, and verify that backups of your configuration exist somewhere other than the VPS itself. A configuration backup means that if the VPS fails completely, you can rebuild on a new server in under an hour instead of starting from scratch.

A VPS costs a few dollars a month and removes the most common cause of bot failure: the bot simply not running. For anyone serious about automated trading, it is the cheapest reliability upgrade available, and it turns a hobby setup into a system you can actually depend on.
