Forex and crypto are the two markets where AI trading bots are most popular, and many traders assume a bot that works in one will work in the other. That assumption is expensive. The two markets differ in structure, liquidity, volatility, trading hours, and regulation, and those differences change how a bot should be built, configured, and monitored. Understanding them before you deploy a bot saves you from applying the right strategy to the wrong market.

Crypto markets trade twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, with no close. A crypto bot must handle weekend moves, holiday gaps, and the absence of any quiet period for maintenance. Forex trades twenty-four hours a day but only five days a week, with a weekend break that creates gaps on Sunday open. A forex bot can use the weekend for updates, retraining, and review, while a crypto bot has no natural downtime. This matters for model maintenance: a forex bot's model can be retrained weekly on a schedule, while a crypto bot needs retraining routines that run without interrupting live trading.

Liquidity also differs sharply. Major forex pairs have enormous depth, which means large orders can be filled with minimal slippage. Crypto liquidity is fragmented across dozens of exchanges, and even large coins can have thin order books on smaller venues. A bot that assumes forex-level liquidity will suffer worse fills in crypto, especially on altcoins. Conversely, a bot built for crypto's fragmentation may underuse the deep liquidity available in forex.

Crypto is far more volatile than forex. A five percent daily move is unremarkable for Bitcoin and routine for smaller coins, while a one percent daily move is large for EUR/USD. This changes everything about risk settings. Stop losses, position sizes, and daily loss limits that are sensible in forex will be triggered constantly in crypto by normal noise. Bots need wider stops, smaller position sizes relative to volatility, and drawdown limits calibrated to the market's actual range, not copied from another market's template.

Volatility also changes the strategies that work. Mean-reversion strategies, which profit from price returning to an average, often perform well in crypto's sharp swings. Trend-following strategies tend to be more reliable in forex, where trends driven by central bank policy can persist for months. A bot marketed as universal may simply be running a strategy tuned for one market and misapplied to the other. Check which market the strategy was developed and tested on before trusting it elsewhere.

Trading costs differ too. Forex spreads on majors are tiny, often under one pip, and commissions are low, which makes high-frequency bot strategies viable. Crypto fees vary widely by exchange and are often higher, and network fees for moving funds add another layer. A bot that trades frequently can hand back a large share of its gross profits in crypto fees, a problem that barely exists in forex majors.

Regulation adds another difference. Forex brokers in major jurisdictions operate under established regulatory frameworks, with segregated client funds and oversight. Crypto exchanges vary enormously, from well-regulated platforms to lightly supervised ones, and exchange failure is a real risk that forex traders rarely face. A bot's exchange risk in crypto therefore deserves the same attention as its strategy risk. Finally, data quality matters for AI models: forex price data is standardised and deep, going back decades, while crypto data is shorter, messier, and varies between exchanges, which affects how well models can be trained and validated.

The practical conclusion is to treat forex bots and crypto bots as different tools. For forex, look for bots with strong risk controls, session awareness, and strategies built around macroeconomic trends. For crypto, look for bots with robust volatility handling, exchange redundancy, and strategies tested across full market cycles including crashes. If a provider claims one bot masters both markets equally, ask how it adapts its risk settings, its trading hours, and its strategy to each market's structure. A convincing answer will be specific. A vague answer is a warning.

Many traders eventually run separate bots for each market, configured independently. That approach costs more in subscriptions but avoids the single biggest mistake in automated trading: assuming that what works in one market works in another. Markets are different. Your bots should be too.
