Why Did Bitcoin Price Fall After Binance Hack?
⚡ Executive Brief & Key Takeaways
  • Primary Signal: Why Did Bitcoin Price Fall After Binance Hack?
  • Overview: Bitcoin fell below $77,000 after Binance's 29 Oct 2026 breach, with ether and BNB also down and more than $1 billion in leveraged positions liquidated in 24 hours....
  • Verification: Analyzed and compiled by 1UpTrade Quant editorial monitoring desk.

On 30 Oct 2026, the clearest market fact after the Binance breach is the size of the drop. Bitcoin fell below $77,000, down about 4.5 percent in 24 hours to $76,664, and later stood at about $77,984. Ether fell about 3.2 percent and BNB fell about 3.9 percent, while more than $1 billion in leveraged positions was liquidated in 24 hours.

The trigger reported for that move was the security breach at Binance on 29 Oct 2026. Binance is described as the world's largest crypto exchange, so a breach there carries weight across the market. The estimated impact is about $6.3 billion, which would be the largest crypto theft on record, surpassing Bybit's $1.5 billion in 2025. Those figures are preliminary estimates, and the investigation is ongoing.

Price falls after a major exchange incident often reflect uncertainty rather than a single confirmed loss figure. In this case, several unknowns were still open at the time of reporting: the full scope of the breach, the final recovered amount, and the timing of withdrawal resumption. Readers should keep that uncertainty in mind rather than treating the first price move as a settled verdict on long-term value.

The preliminary account of how the breach happened added to that uncertainty. Investigators say a compromised DevOps engineer's laptop may have let an attacker access a service container and submit unauthorised withdrawal transactions. No evidence of a wallet private key leak has been found at the preliminary stage.

A specific wallet detail also drew attention. Reports say the attacker used the Ethereum feature EIP-7702 on a wallet called Binance 14, which was in Binance's 1 Oct proof of reserves, turning it into a sweeper. About 204,500 ETH moved, and ETH backing fell to near 94 percent from 100 percent on 1 Oct.

Liquidations help explain why a sharp move can deepen quickly. When more than $1 billion in leveraged positions is liquidated in 24 hours, forced selling and position closures can add pressure beyond the initial reaction to the news itself. That is a description of market mechanics in this episode, not a prediction about where prices go next.

Binance's own statements were aimed at limiting further alarm. Co-CEO Yi He said all losses will be covered from company funds plus the SAFU emergency fund, which holds about $1 billion in bitcoin, and that user funds are safe. Deposits and withdrawals were suspended as a precaution, with Yi He saying she expects withdrawal resumption to begin within the next 48 hours, although some reports say deposits were unaffected.

About $3 billion has been frozen so far, including $2.3 billion in USDT and USDC, with Tether freezing more than $1.567 billion in USDT, Circle about $823 million in USDC, Ripple about $200 million, and World Liberty Financial $27 million in USD1. Attribution is an investigators' claim, not a court finding: TRM Labs traced the incident to the North Korean unit TraderTraitor, other trackers also pointed to North Korea, and Pyongyang has previously denied hacking allegations.

FAQ: How far did Bitcoin fall? It fell below $77,000, down about 4.5 percent in 24 hours to $76,664, later about $77,984. Did other coins fall too? Yes, ether fell about 3.2 percent and BNB about 3.9 percent. Will the next proof-of-reserves snapshot matter for the market picture? The snapshot due on 1 November 2026 will show whether stolen assets were replaced, and readers should rely on official Binance channels for updates.
