Automation removes emotion from trading, but it does not remove risk. A bot follows its rules perfectly, including the bad ones, and it does so around the clock, including while you sleep. That is why risk management for trading bots is arguably more important than for manual trading: a manual trader can hesitate, but a bot cannot. The good news is that the same tools that make bots dangerous also make them controllable, if you set them up before you go live.

Every bot needs a stop loss per trade and a maximum loss limit for the whole bot. The per-trade stop defines the worst outcome of any single position, while the bot-level limit defines the worst outcome of the entire strategy. A common approach is to cap the bot's total drawdown at a level such as 10 to 20 percent of its allocated capital, after which the bot pauses automatically and waits for your review. Without a bot-level limit, a strategy that breaks in a new market regime can keep trading until its capital is gone.

A kill switch is a single action that stops all bot activity immediately, closing or pausing open positions according to your preference. Test it before you need it, and make sure you can trigger it from your phone as well as your computer. Bots fail in unexpected ways: an exchange outage, a bad data feed, or a strategy bug can all produce behaviour you never intended. The traders who survive bot failures are the ones who can stop everything in seconds, not the ones who have to log in, find the setting, and read the manual first.

Cap each position as a percentage of the bot's capital, and cap total exposure across all bots and strategies. This matters because many traders run several bots that look different but trade the same market direction, so a single market move hits them all at once. Treat correlated bots as one position for risk purposes. If three bots all buy the same asset on the same signal, your real exposure is three times what any single bot's settings suggest.

Risk management does not end at setup. Review your bots weekly, checking drawdown, win rate, and whether live behaviour still matches the backtest. Re-run backtests quarterly or after any major market change, and pause any bot whose live results diverge sharply from its tested results. A bot is a tool you manage, not a machine you wind up and forget. The traders who treat bot risk management as an ongoing habit are the ones whose automation survives long enough to be worth having.

Once a month, audit your bots' risk settings as if you were inspecting someone else's work. Check that every bot still has a stop loss, a bot-level loss limit, and a working kill switch. Verify that total exposure across all bots is within your planned limit, and that no two bots have drifted into the same correlated position without you noticing. Review the month's largest loss and ask whether the risk controls worked as intended or whether luck saved you. This audit takes under an hour and catches the slow drift that turns safe setups into dangerous ones, such as a limit raised temporarily and never restored, or a bot left running after its strategy stopped working.

Beyond normal risk limits, stress-test your bot against scenarios you hope never happen. What does it do if the exchange API goes down for an hour, if a flash crash moves price ten percent in minutes, or if a data feed sends a bad price? Simulate these events on paper where possible, and write a manual intervention plan for each one, including who acts, what they do first, and how positions are handled. Many bot disasters are not caused by bad strategies but by unhandled edge cases, and a short stress-testing session can reveal gaps that months of normal trading never would. Preparation for rare events is what separates robust automation from fragile automation.
