  • Overview: Stocks trade in sessions with circuit breakers; crypto trades around the clock with no close. Compare hours, liquidity, fees, data, and regulation before moving a bot across market...

Moving an AI trading bot from stocks to crypto, or the reverse, sounds like a simple settings change. In practice the two markets differ in almost every dimension that affects a bot: trading hours, liquidity structure, volatility, fees, data quality, and regulation. A strategy tuned for one market can fail in the other without any change to its code, because the environment it was tested in no longer exists. Understanding those differences before porting a bot saves the expensive lesson of discovering them with real money.

Hours are the most obvious difference. Stock markets trade in defined sessions with an open, a close, overnight gaps, and circuit breakers that halt trading during extreme moves. Crypto trades twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, with no close and no universal circuit breaker, so a bot must handle weekend moves, holiday liquidity droughts, and news that lands at 3 a.m. on a Sunday. A stock bot that assumes it can always exit at the next open has no equivalent safety net in crypto, and a crypto bot that assumes continuous liquidity will be surprised by the thin, gap-prone open of a stock it has never traded before.

Liquidity and volatility differ in ways that change position sizing. Large-cap stocks typically have deep, regulated order books with designated market makers, while crypto liquidity is fragmented across many exchanges, each with its own book, and can vanish quickly in a stress event. Crypto volatility is generally higher, with double-digit daily moves that would be extraordinary for a blue-chip stock, so the same percentage stop that works for stocks can be noise in crypto, and the same leverage that is modest for stocks can be ruinous for crypto. Funding rates on crypto perpetuals add a carrying cost with no stock equivalent, while stock bots must handle dividends, splits, earnings gaps, and borrow costs for short positions.

Data and regulation complete the picture. Stock data is standardised, timestamped, and heavily regulated, with consolidated tapes and strict reporting, while crypto data varies by exchange, can include wash trading on less reputable venues, and may lack the corporate-action history a stock model takes for granted. Regulatory protections also differ: stock brokers typically offer investor protection schemes and segregated accounts under established rules, while crypto exchanges vary widely by jurisdiction, and some offer little recourse if they fail. A bot's API permissions need the same care in both markets: trade-only keys with withdrawals disabled, one key per service, and immediate revocation when a service is no longer used.

Port a bot across markets only with a fresh test cycle. Re-run backtests and walk-forward tests on the new market's own data, with its own fees, spreads, and session structure, then paper-trade for several weeks including at least one volatile event. Resize positions for the new market's volatility rather than copying the old size, and re-check the kill switch, daily loss limit, and event calendar for the new market's release schedule. A bot is not a universal money machine; it is a set of assumptions about a specific market, and those assumptions must be re-earned every time the market changes.

A final difference is psychological, and it affects bot owners more than bots: crypto's round-the-clock market means there is never a natural stopping point, so owners check performance at midnight, tweak parameters after every drawdown, and burn out. Stock market closes, for all their inconvenience, enforce rest. If you run a crypto bot, set your own close: fixed review times, no parameter changes outside them, and alerts only for kill-switch events. The bot does not need sleep, but its owner does.
